CFA Level 3 is the final and most strategic stage of the CFA Program—focusing on real-world portfolio management, wealth planning, and decision-making skills required by senior investment professionals. As the curriculum evolves every year, a structured preparation plan becomes essential for passing the CFA Level 3 exam on your first attempt.
Unlike the earlier levels, the CFA Level 3 exam combines vignette-based item sets with constructed-response (essay) questions, challenging candidates to demonstrate their ability to apply concepts, justify decisions, and write clear, professional arguments. The exam for 2026 window is available in February and August, with up to six attempts allowed per level.
The CFA Level 3 curriculum assesses advanced investment skills through six major areas:
- Asset Allocation (15–20%)
- Portfolio Construction (15–20%)
- Performance Measurement (5–10%)
- Derivatives & Risk Management (10–15%)
- Ethical & Professional Standards (10–15%)
- Specialized Pathways (choose one Pathways from 3 topics) (30–35%)
The exam consists of 10–12 essay questions and 10–12 item sets, split across two sessions (2 hours 12 minutes each). Each session contains a balanced mix of constructed-response questions and item sets—making time management and strategy key components of passing the CFA Level 3 exam.
